Joan Anzelmo served for nearly 35 years in the National Park Service. She retired in July 2011 after serving four years as park superintendent of Colorado National Monument. She has also held Chief of Public Affairs and spokesperson positions in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks as well as the agency’s national Chief of Public Affairs and senior spokesperson in Washington, D.C. She served at the National Interagency Fire Center as BLM’s Chief of External Affairs, Park Manager at Great Falls Park, Va. and Chief of Visitor Services at the National Visitor Center in Historic Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Joan, a native of Washington, D.C., graduated from the University of Maryland in 1975 with B.A. in French. She is conversant in French, Spanish and Italian and has represented the NPS at tourism conferences in France and Italy.

Joan is the recipient of numerous awards including the Department of the Interior’s Superior and Meritorious Service awards as well as is mentioned in Congressional Record and White House commendatory citations. In October she was honored by the National Parks and Conservation Association as the 2011 winner of the Stephen T. Mather award for her resource protection work at Colorado National Monument. Upon retirement, Joan moved back to Jackson, Wyoming. There she serves on the boards of directors for the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation; the Jackson Hole Farmer’s Market and the Executive Council for the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees. Joan also serves in a voluntary capacity as advisor to the grassroots organization, Rags Over The Arkansas River, (ROAR), based in Canon City, Colorado. Joan's term expires December 31, 2014.
