Cherry Payne worked for the National Park Service for 34+ years, serving in urban and rural park units and the Washington Office. Most of her career was spent in the delivery, management, and supervision of interpretive and educational services, though she held a law enforcement commission for part of her career, and worked in an administrative position for the Water Resources Division. She was a member of several national committees, including the National Education Council and the Wilderness Leadership Council. Cherry served as acting superintendent at Cape Lookout National Seashore and Cape Canaveral National Seashore, before becoming the superintendent of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in Alaska, from which she retired in September, 2010. She worked in Everglades, Yosemite, San Antonio Missions, the Santa Fe and Trail of Tears National Historic Trails, Grand Teton, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and the National Mall.
