Before retiring in 2011, Dan was the Acting Chief and Deputy Chief of Natural Resources and Science for the National Capital Region of the National Park Service which is located at the Center for Urban Ecology in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, he was the Chief of Natural Resources Management and Chief Ranger at George Washington Memorial Parkway. His National Park Service career has included four regions. He began his National Park Service career as a campground ranger at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma. He was the Chief, North District Interpreter at Cape Cod National Seashore. He also worked in natural resource management and interpretation at Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Muir Woods National Monument for over a decade. Dan was awarded the Department of the Interior (DOI) Meritorious Service Award in 2011. Dan was also the first Chief of Interpretation for Oklahoma Division of State Parks and worked for the National Parks and Recreation Association on an energy conservation project for National Parks and Wildlife Refuges. Dan currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland with his partner, Bryan Vinyard where he owns a small environmental consulting company. He serves as the Legislative Analyst for the Northcoast Environmental Center in Northern California. Dan graduated from Humboldt State University in Northern California with a Bachelors of Science in Natural Resources Management where he occasionally gives presentations to Natural Resource Management classes.
