Letter to DOI Secretary Kempthorne on Coburn Guns in NPs Amendment
February 4, 2008
SENT VIA FAX – 202-208-6956
Secretary Dirk Kempthorne
Department of the Interior
18th and C Streets NW
Washington DC 20042
Dear Secretary Kempthorne:
As you probably know by now, Senator Tom Coburn plans to introduce an amendment (#3967) to S.2483 that would prohibit the Secretary of Interior from enforcing regulations currently in place that require gun owners to have their guns unloaded and stored while visiting most units of the National Park System.
We would like to know if you are taking actions to see that this amendment is not introduced, or in the event it is introduced, to oppose it and to try to educate Senators about reasons this amendment would not be in the best interests of the National Park System? If you are not, we urge you to do so. If you are not planning on taking these actions, could you explain to us why you are not?
Sincerely,
J. W. “Bill” Wade
Chair, Executive Council
