Prior to a possible vote this week, the 635-member Coalition of National Park Service Retirees (CNPSR) today warned the U.S. Senate about an expected amendment to S. 2483 that would bar the U.S. Secretary of the Interior from continuing to enforce current rules that allow gun owners to have their guns unloaded and stored while visiting national parks.
Few people work harder at protecting park values than Kristen Brengel, who has worked tirelessly for a number of years to preserve the values of the National Park System.

The CNPSR today expressed its “outrage and astonishment” at a proposal by Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA), the powerful chairman of the House Resources Committee, to sell 16 national parks in order to enrich energy and real estate speculators.
An ongoing and secret Interior Department attempt to rewrite and override 90 years of laws, rules and court rulings governing the 388 sites in the U.S. National Park System would “hijack” the American’s national parks, leaving them wide open for what are now barred uses and making it extremely unlikely that the sites would survive as unspoiled treasures for future generations of Americans.
